Earthquake Preparedness

While earthquakes are uncommon in Florida, our teams recognize that commercial office buildings, high-rise residential properties, healthcare facilities, and mixed-use developments must be prepared for all hazards.

Consistent with guidance from FEMA, the safest response during an earthquake in a high-rise building is to remain inside, protect yourself from falling hazards, and avoid actions that could increase the risk of injury. Modern high-rise buildings are engineered to sway during seismic activity, and occupants should expect movement, alarms, and other building system activations.

Preparedness, calm leadership, and clear communication are critical to minimizing risk and ensuring the safety of occupants.

Key Earthquake Safety Guidelines

During the Earthquake

  • Drop, Cover, and Hold On.
  • Stay inside the building.
  • Move away from windows, glass, and exterior walls.
  • Protect your head and neck under sturdy furniture or against an interior wall.
  • Do not run outside.
  • Do not use elevators.

Expect Normal Building Reactions

  • High-rise buildings may sway.
  • Fire alarms and sprinkler systems may activate.
  • Power interruptions may occur.
  • These conditions do not necessarily indicate structural failure.

After the Shaking Stops

  • Check yourself and those around you for injuries.
  • Be prepared for aftershocks.
  • Watch for fire, water leaks, damaged utilities, and other hazards.
  • Follow instructions from emergency responders and building management.
  • Evacuate using stairwells only if directed or if conditions make remaining inside unsafe.
